New Flagstaff Dental Office of Dr. Bacon
We have broken ground on our new office! The existing building is 4 levels when including the basement. This 100 year old building is getting ready for it's next phase: A dental office. It was a home originally to the Kochs (rhymes with "Cokes"). Mr. Koch ran the mill for the Riordans. It then spent many years as the home to the Bledsoe's, a family of 5. The maid lived downstairs. There were also slot machines and poker in the basement! (The basement will have a slightly less exciting use as a residential apartment when the remodel is finished) The house was then transformed into a frat house. One can just imagine all the stories there. It was later the law office of Hufford and Horstman. The attic was remodeled into a very attractive business area with fantastic views. It was later sold to 2 lawyers and a contractor from whom Dr. Bacon purchased the building in 2014.
The basement and the first floor will be extended southward to allow for
modern dental operatories on the first floor and an as a yet to be determined business below it. The original basement is being remodeled for a 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment. The original first floor will be the reception area, waiting room, staff room and laboratory for Dr. Bacons dental practice.
The second floor, which used to be the bedrooms for the Bledsoe family, is office space for 3 Flagstaff businesses. The attic is currently an engineering firm. Lastly, the Carriage house will be converted into a cute Studio Apartment.
There will be 22 parking spots behind the new office as well as on street parking. (Good luck with that). We are hoping to be up and running in March!

Are gold crowns obsolete?
Are gold crowns obsolete?
There are many great tooth colored crowns that are so estheic that even a dentist won't know it is not a natural tooth at first glance. That being said, why would anyone ever choose gold? Well, in an area such as your lower posteriors it is possible for some people that it doesn't show when you smile or laugh. In other words, if it can't be seen, maybe one should consider the other qualities we look for in an ideal crown:
1. Longevity- Gold is the only type of crown that NEVER breaks. They have been shown to sometimes last a lifetime.
2. Feel-Gold feels most like your opposing natural tooth structure.
3. Drilling necessary- There is less drilling needed for a gold crown preparation than all the porcelain crowns available. Sometimes when a lot of tooth structure has already been lost due to decay or fracture
conserving tooth structure increases the long term prognosis for your tooth!

Q.I am an individual patient needing several crowns and fillings. What is the best dental insurance I can get for treatment in Flagstaff? I am a self employed plumber.

Dental filling Material
If you have a cavity, what are your filling options?
25 years ago the choice was gold alloy or amalgam, with 99% being done in amalgam(a mixture of silver, mercury and smaller amounts of other metals).
Today, in Dr. Bacon's office in Flagstaff, AZ we usually use a tooth colored plastic to fill your tooth.
IT has many advantages over amalgam:
1. esthetic- we match to your tooth color
2. no mercury- health issue
3. bonds to your tooth- decreases chance for tooth fracture and need for a crown later.
Of composites, there are many (over 50) different brands and types. Dr. Bacon has done extensive research and uses a few different types depending on the size of the filling and the need for cosmetic results (He uses a different kind for a back tooth than for a front tooth.) He does not choose his filling material based on cost but decides based on physical properties and cosmetic appearance.
Some composites shrink more than others while setting up. This is very important because if the filling shrinks too much while setting it can leave a gap or even lead to tooth fracture.
It is recommended that your tooth color filling be placed with a rubber dam in place which assures a dry field for your filling. Moisture contamination will interfere with the bond of the filling and cause it to leak.
Dr. Bacon will evaluate your situation and pick the material that is best for you.
